Out here in Evergreen, the ground is a different animal than the flat lots down in the metro. Homes sit up around 7,200 feet on steep, rocky slopes, often on decomposed granite instead of deep soil. Lots are tucked into pines and canyons, and the grade can drop off fast behind the house. To build a patio or deck that feels level and safe up here, you have to work with the slope, not fight it. That means retaining walls, real footings, and drainage that carries snowmelt away from the house instead of down into it.
The mountain climate shapes everything. At this height the season is short, the snow is deeper, and the ground freezes hard and stays frozen longer than it does in Golden or Lakewood. The sun is intense too, so cheap materials fade and crack fast. We set footings below the frost line, pick finishes that hold up to sun and snow, and plan the build around the weather window so the work gets done right before winter closes in.
Two more things come with living in the Evergreen foothills: wildfire and wildlife. Much of the area sits in a moderate to high wildfire zone, so we design the space to help, not hurt. We keep the first five feet around your home noncombustible with stone, pavers, and gravel, and we lay things out to fit defensible space guidelines. Deer and elk pass right through these yards and browse most soft plants, so we lean on tough native and deer-resistant plants that can take it. Most of Evergreen is unincorporated, so permits run through Jefferson County, and many neighborhoods have an HOA. We handle both.
